How do you create a bold vision for success?

 

There are three steps to creating a bold vision for success.

1. Clarify your intentions

Ask yourself a series of questions.  Write the answers in your journal.

What major indulgence are you willing to experience in 2015?
What would you like to evolve most about yourself in 2015?
How would you like to make a difference in the world?
What would you like to be your biggest triumph in 2015?
What would you be most happy completing in 2015?
What advice would you give yourself?
What is the most loving service you can imagine in 2015?
What compliment would you like to receive?
What is the grandest adventure you can imagine?
What would you like to experience more of in 2015?
What would you like to explore or create in 2015?
What makes your heart sing?

2.Imagine  yourself one year from today.

What does your life like look? What does it feel like? Who are you if you have been successful? Imagine you are having coffee with an old friend and you are telling her about your year. Write your vision including as many details, feeling, and experiences as if they all came true.  Oh Mary let me share what an exiting year I had.  I published The Creative Activist in June. What a thrill it was to see the numbers from Amazon each week as they climbed to the top of the charts. I had a number one best seller in Personal Growth and Leadership category.  The launch party was so much fun. The DJ I hired played all my favorite songs, Celebrate, Let it Go, Climb. I got to dance with my granddaughters and Ali brought the baby. We got some great family photos to send to mom.

3. Create a vision board.

What is a Vision Board?

A vision board (also called a Treasure Map or Dream Board) is typically a poster board on which you paste or collage images and words from magazines, cards or Pinterest that inspire you. The theory is that you surround yourself with images of what you want to have in your life or images of who you want to become. They are really simple to do and very powerful.

There are two types of vision boards. The first is for opening and allowing and the other is when you know what you want to manifest. I have been doing both types for many years.

When I went through a deep depression in my mid-thirties I could not see any way out. I did not know what joy and happiness could look like so I collected images of pictures that made me smile. I put them in a book and I spent time every day looking at them and it freed my mind to consider something new and different. I eventually came to the other side. Before I ever thought of interviewing over 120 leaders around the country and becoming a speaker and a radio show host I created a vision board of Oprah and other influential leaders I admired like Eve Ensler who wrote the Vagina Monologue and started a movement. I put this in my office and looked at it all the time.                         vision board

In 2013, I decided it was time to release 50 pounds and get active and I made a specific board that had images of me at a thinner weight that I put on the fridge and one with images and words such as “it is safe to lose weight” in the bathroom where I could see it all the time. Since then I have lost 60 pounds.

Last year I created a vision to write The Creative Activist: One Person Can Make A Difference. I will have the first draft finished by Dec. 31st, 2014. Having a powerful vision, written and visual, keeps me motivated and inspired when I hit “road blocks”. We all have days like that but looking at my vision board on Pinterest just makes me smile. It reminds me who I am serving, my work matters and I can contribute to making the world a better place.

Supplies for Creating a Vision Board:

Poster board

Manila envelopes to collect materials

Scissors

Glue sticks, rubber cement or fabric glue Markers, gel pens, glitter pens

Photographs of you

A big stack of different magazines as well as different kinds of paper: post cards, gift wrap, stamps, maps, calendars

The Seven Steps of Creating a Vision Board:

Step 1: Go through your magazines and pull out pictures, words or headlines that strike your fancy. Have fun with it. Don’t censure yourself. If an image or word appeals just tear it out. I know many people like to use a scissors, but ripping is important to the experience. It increases your creativity, imagination and intuition. You can trim them later.

Step 2: Go through the images and see if any themes emerge. I was working with a client and she was amazed that what began as a general” I don’t know what I want to do with my career”… blossomed into something very specific based on the images she choose. It actually brought her clarity.

Step 3: Eliminate any images that no longer feel right.

Step 4: Glue everything onto the board. You can add writing, stickers, glitter or other materials.

Step 5. Title it

Step 6: Hang your vision board in a place where you will see it often.

Step 7. Spend time looking at it and journal about your experience. What feelings and thoughts have come to the surface? What action steps or strategies have emerged from the images?

If a traditional vision board does not resonate try these options.

Mandala

Mandala is the Sanskrit word for magic circle. Throughout history it has been part of spiritual and religious practices from Buddhist monks to Native American medicine men. Draw a circle within a circle. In the smaller inner circle put a picture of you as your most happy and radiant self and fill in the images in the larger circle what you want. Sometimes I place a spiritual icon or a peaceful image such as a lotus flower in the center.

Sandra Yancey Succeeding Inspite of Everything

According to Sandra Yancey the Founder and CEO of eWomen Network Inc, International Award Winning Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, Movie Producer and a Bestselling Author. “I didn’t realize that I was poor and that my mother was on welfare. I didn’t know  that these two very handsome men in suits that would come to the house once a month with  groceries were from the church, Saint Vincent De Paul, bringing food to the poor.”

Sandra may not have had lots of money but she had lots of love and support from her mom. Her mom inspired her to become a leader. My mom said “Sandra, go out and set yourself on fire. Everyone will come and watch you burn.” And I never really understood what that meant until later in life. We are attracted to those people that are bright, those people that have that glow, that essence, that energy, that vibration that is a quality of a great leader. People are drawn to you. You have to have followers to be a leader.

I first met Sandra at the Lisa Sassevich, Event Profit Secrets. I was so impressed with Sandra’s commitment to serving others is the eWomenNetwork Foundation, a 501(c) (3) non-profit, which supports the financial and emotional health of women and children in need I donated 100 Art From My Heart books and became a member of eWomen. How did you get started in leadership?

My family  wanted me to go to college. So I went on my own, I paid my own way; I worked and was the first one in the family to graduate with a college degree.  And then I went after my advanced degrees. I worked my way up the corporate ladder from the clerical ranks to running a department.

After 13 years of being in corporate America, I moved from the “Little ‘D’” to the “Big ‘D’” – Dayton, Ohio to Dallas, Texas. At that point in time, I started a solo consulting practice, which is when I got my first real taste of what it meant to be really successful. I was making great money but I was just miserable, I mean I was always on a plane and my children were little that’s the time in my life where I wanted to be home– that’s part of the reason why I left Corporate America.

What inspired eWomen?

I started going to networking groups, which were predominately male and I had my “Aha!” moment about the “good old boys” network – I mean this in a good way! These groups focused on best practices, leads, strategic introductions, and me being a female and in the minority felt welcome, but not quite “allowed” to play the game.

I went to a few women’s groups, but they just didn’t compare. I said, “Where are all the women that want to build million-dollar businesses?”  I thought something’s missing that what we need is a hybrid, the integration of the focus and the strategy that I witnessed with the men’s group but in a way that was more comfortable for women, that’s relational.  I wanted to create a system and structure that allowed women to be very clear about monetizing their goals.

We’ve grown from being simply a networking organization to a success system. We have the richest online portal of resources from women subject matter experts that can be accessed at any time, by anyone.

What are the qualities of a great leader?

  What really differentiates great leaders is the secret sauce, relationships. It doesn’t matter if you’ve got a really great idea, a great business model,  fancy website with all the bells and whistles today and you have a four color business card and you’ve got the perfect tool or the opportunity that can change the planet.  I mean if you aren’t good at building relationships you really do have nothing, I mean at some level I think we’re all in the relationship business no matter what product or service we sell. 

 

Do you have any secrets for people just starting out?

  Don’t fake it till you make it. I did that and I think that was part of  my early struggles and almost my demise. If someone asked how are you” oh I’m fine, yet I wasn’t sleeping and the doors were to about to close. When you do that you’re being an impostor.  When you’re being an impostor you’re not living your authentic self and I don’t think that you can really create sustainable happiness and success when you are faking it. It doesn’t mean you have to cry and tell everybody your problems but it doesn’t mean you need to tell the people that can help you most that everything is fine because then they can’t help you.

 I think that multitasking for women is the kiss of death.  We think that nobody else can do it quite like us, so we micromanage and struggle.  And that’s for everything, from your business to how you fold your towels. The truth of the matter is if your customer has a great experience does it really have to be done by you? Every towel can be folded slightly different, none of the corners match, but my guess is the customer, which is your family, would be more thrilled to know that the towels are available and they’re clean rather  than the frustration and pain you go through knocking yourself out because you feel like you’ve got to do it all.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I want my legacy to be that she talked her talk. She provided access to others to be able to experience and live their purpose, their greatness and their contribution. I want to be missed. The greatest gift for me, would be that someone would say I’m better as a result of knowing her.

How Do You Define Success?

As the New Year approaches we inevitably start to ask the big questions: Will the economy finally turn around? Will I have a job next year? Am I going to finally meet the love of my life? We are busy creating our 2014 business plan, New Year’s resolutions for personal growth and preparing for the diet that starts on Jan. 2. But the question remains how do you know if you had a good year? How do you know when you have been successful?

Success seems like this this elusive, mythical creature that we prepare for, chase after and desire: Money, Celebrity, Power. If we don’t get it we feel like a failure. Do you remember hearing your parents talk about people who jumped out of windows because they lost “everything” in the great crash. Similarly people drop out, break down, have mid life crisis because they aren’t achieving or being who they think they should.

Last year I felt like a failure. I did not reach my “financial goals” and I had to dip into my savings one more time to keep my business going.  Not until I looked deeper at my life and business did I see how “rich” I really was.  I created a success map for myself. It is an embellished  time line. I started at  the beginning of the year in the left hand corner and went through the year. I asked myself a series of questions and I plotted them out on the paper . When I was finished I was amazed at what I accomplished. The people I impacted and how I made a difference in the world.

Imagine you are standing at the back of your church listening to your eulogy. What are they saying about you? Oh he had three beautiful homes and an antique car collection or he was an inspiration to his family and neighbors. He was never too busy to stop and give a helping hand. Are they going to remember the big deal you closed at work or how you inspired and mentored your team. 

What do you want to be known and remembered for?

Only when you can define what is most important in your life can you set the right priorities for your life and become an integrated leader” – Bill George with Peter Sims, True North

If you aren’t happy and feeling successful it’s time to rethink how you define success, and start making changes to your professional and personal life that align with that definition.

 

How to Make a Success Map

Materials:

paper

markers/colored pens

stickers ( gold stars, awesome, hearts, smiley faces)

Steps to take:

Write down your current definition of success.

Create your success map based on questions listed below ( obviously add your own)

Identify your top ten successes

Add stickers

Journal about your experience. What patterns emerged? Any themes?

Write your new definition of success.

Create an affirmation that you put on a 3×5 index card

Place them where you can see them every day: mirror, in the car, above your desk, in your wallet.

Celebrate your accomplishments.
